WOODSTOCK 1999

Woodstock 1999, held July 23-25, 1999 was the second large-scale music festival (after Woodstock '94) that attempted to emulate the success of the original Woodstock Festival of 1969. Like the previous concerts with the same name, it was held in upstate New York, this time in Rome, New York. Approximately 200,000 people attended the festival. Cable network MTV covered the concert extensively and live coverage of the entire weekend was available on pay-per-view. Excerpts from the performances were later released on compact disc and DVD.

Woodstock '99 is best remembered for reports of violence, rape, fires, and an abrupt closing down of the show.

The concert was held at the former Griffiss Air Force Base, a Superfund site.

Prior to the concert, the promoters of the event were determined to avoid the gate-crashing that had occurred at previous festivals, and had characterized the site as "defensible", describing the 12-foot plywood and steel fence intended to keep out those without tickets. About 500 New York State Police Troopers were hired for security.

In addition to two main stages, secondary venues were available including several alternate stages, a night-time rave music tent and a film festival (sponsored by the Independent Film Channel) held in a former airplane hangar.

In contrast to the more grass-roots nature of the original Woodstock festival, Woodstock 1999 was conceived and executed as a commercial venture with dozens of corporate sponsors, and included the presence of vendor "malls" and modern acoutrements such as ATMs and e-mail stations.

Critics later decried the use of the Woodstock brand name for such an event as "crass commercialization" and decried "concert organizers who gouged the kids with grossly overpriced water, beer, and food". Tickets for the event were priced at $150 plus service charges, at the time considered high for a festival of this type.

Tom Morello, the politically-active guitarist for festival performers Rage Against the Machine later "suggested an affinity between the looters and rapists at the event and the corporate entities that sponsored it."

The festival featured a diverse lineup of acts and early reviews for many of the acts were positive; critics particularly praised performances by George Clinton, Jamiroquai, James Brown, Sheryl Crow, and Rage Against the Machine. However, critical and public attention quickly turned to the deteriorating environment and crowd behavior.

Problems of Woodstock 1999

Oppressive heat and difficult environmental conditions marred the festival from early on.

Participants who had not brought sufficient food or water to the show were left to buy from onsite vendors, whose merchandise was expensive (a single-serving pizza sold for $12, and 20-ounce bottles of water and soda for $4).

Poor sanitation and security, the lack of available water, and 100-degree heat with no available shade quickly led to a dangerous environment.

The number of toilets installed proved insufficient for the number of attendees. Within a short time, the few facilities were unusable and overflowing onto the concert grounds. People stood in line to access the water fountains, until frustration impelled a few to break the pipes apart to provide water to those in the middle of the line; this in turn led to the creation of large mud pits and attendant mud-fights that added to the general chaos.

Some crowd violence and looting was reported during the Saturday night performance by Limp Bizkit, including a rendition of the song "Break Stuff". Reviewers of the concert criticized Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst as "irresponsible" for encouraging the crowd to destructive behavior.

Violence escalated the following night in the final hours of the concert as Red Hot Chili Peppers performed. A group of peace promoters led by an independent group called Pax had distributed candles to those stopping at their booth during the day, intending them for a candlelight vigil to be held during the Red Hot Chili Peppers' performance of the song "Under the Bridge". During the band's set, the crowd began to light the candles, some also using them to start bonfires. The hundreds of empty plastic water bottles that littered the lawn/dance area were found to be excellent fuel for the fires.

After the Red Hot Chili Peppers were finished with their main set, the audience was informed about "a bit of a problem." An audio tower caught fire, and the fire department was called in to extinguish it.

Back onstage for an encore, the Chili Peppers' lead singer Anthony Kiedis remarked how amazing the fires looked from the stage, comparing them to a scene in the film Apocalypse Now. The band proceeded to play "Sir Psycho Sexy", followed by their rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire". Kiedis later stated in his autobiography that Jimi Hendrix's sister asked the Chili Peppers to play "Fire" in honor of Jimi, and that they were not playing it to encourage the crowd.

Many large bonfires were burning high before the band left the stage for the last time. Participants danced in circles around the fires. Looking for more fuel, some tore off panels of plywood from the supposedly inviolable security perimeter fence. ATMs were tipped over and broken into, trailers full of merchandise and equipment were forced open and burglarized, and abandoned vendor booths were turned over, and set on fire.

MTV, which had been providing live coverage, removed its entire crew. MTV host Kurt Loder described the scene in the July 27, 1999 issue of USA Today:

"It was dangerous to be around. The whole scene was scary. There were just waves of hatred bouncing around the place, (...) It was clear we had to get out of there.... It was like a concentration camp. To get in, you get frisked to make sure you're not bringing in any water or food that would prevent you from buying from their outrageously priced booths. You wallow around in garbage and human waste. There was a palpable mood of anger."

After some time, a large force of New York State Troopers, local police, and various other law enforcement showed up. Most had crowd control gear and proceeded to form a riot-line that flushed the crowd to the northwest, away from the stage located at the eastern end of the airfield. Few in the crowd offered strong resistance and they quickly dispersed back toward the campground and out the main entrance.

Police later reported that at least four rapes had occurred during the concert.[18] Seven arrests were made on the final night of the concert and, afterward, police reviewed video footage, hoping to identify and hold accountable looters who, amid the chaos, had not been arrested. Some one-dozen trailers, a small bus and a number of booths and portable toilets were burned in the fray. Six people were injured.

Performer List

No groups that performed at the original Woodstock festival took the stage at Woodstock 1999, although John Entwistle of The Who performed a solo set, and Micky Hart, drummer of the Grateful Dead, played with his band Planet Drum.

Recordings

Music from Woodstock 1999 was released on a two-disc compact disc set, Woodstock 1999. The album features 32 performing artists, and was released on Epic Records in October 1999.

A DVD of concert highlights, also entitled Woodstock 1999 was released in March 2000. It features one song each from 28 of the participating acts.

Adnan Buyung Nasution: Siapa Otak Kasus KPK?

Ketua Tim 8 Adnan Buyung Nasution meminta publik mewaspadai kemungkinan adanya operasi khusus untuk meruntuhkan Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi.

“Apakah ada semacam opsus di zaman Soeharto?” kata Buyung, di Jakarta, Rabu (11/11), sebagaimana diberitakan Tempo. “Siapa otaknya semua ini?”

Ini karena, kata Buyung, ada operasi khusus yang digelar di era Soeharto untuk menghancurkan orang-orang yang dianggap melawan presiden dan rezim pemerintah saat itu.

Jika operasi besar kali ini benar-benar ada, menurut Buyung, targetnya bukan hanya menyeret para pemimpin KPK ke penjara, tetapi juga “menghabisi” institusi itu sendiri,

Sebab, Buyung menenggarai adanya rekayasa pemidanaan wakil ketua nonaktif KPK, Bibit Samad Rianto dan Chandra M. Hamzah.

“Penetapan keduanya sebagai tersangka tidak didasari bukti-bukti yang kuat!” tandas Buyung.

Menurut Buyung, indikasi adanya skenario besar semakin nyata setelah kesaksian Wiliardi Wizard. Bekas Kepala Kepolisian Resor Jakarta Selatan itu menyatakan, ada upaya petinggi kepolisian untuk menyeret ketua nonaktif KPK, Antasari Azhar, dalam kasus pembunuhan Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.

Oleh sebab itu, Buyung meminta agar Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono segera bertindak.

“Jangan sampai seperti ini terus-menerus, terjadi berlarut-larut,” pinta Buyung. “Saya pikir Presiden harus segera tanpa diminta rakyat. Beliau harus cepat, tanggap, dan menghadapi masalah ini.”

Pada kesempatan yang sama Buyung juga menghimbau agar Komisi Hukum DPR juga mengambil langkah ke depan.

“Jangan berkutat dan berputar-putar di di tempat!” seru Buyung.

Menurut Buyung, Tim 8 telah memberikan tiga opsi untuk penyelesaian kasus Bibit-Chandra: pertama, kasus itu dihentikan oleh kepolisian lewat surat perintah penghentian penyidikan; kedua, Kejaksaan Agung juga bisa mengeluarkan surat keputusan penghentian penuntutan; ketiga, Presiden bisa menggunakan senjata pamungkas dengan meminta agar kasus itu dihentikan demi kepentingan umum.

NASA: Isu Kiamat 2012 Bohong Belaka

Bagi pecinta film pasti sudah mengetahui bahwa Jumat (13/11) merupakan hari tayang perdana fim “2012”, yang dilatarbelakangi dugaan bahwa pada 21 Desember 2012—sesuai batas akhir penanggalan Bangsa Maya—akan terjadi kiamat.

Memang, tanggal itu adalah akhir dari periode panjang kalender Maya. Tapi seperti halnya kalender Masehi yang dimulai tiap 1 Januari. Periode kalender Maya juga akan dimulai lagi.

Benarkah ada planet bernama Nibiru atau Planet X atau Planet Eris yang kemudian akan mendekat ke bumi dan mengakibatkan kehancuran?

Nibiru atau cerita lain soal planet liar adalah cerita bohong (hoax). Tidak ada dasar ilmiah dan faktual yang jadi dasar klaim tersebut. Jika Nibiru atau planet X itu nyata dan berhadap-hadapan dengan bumi pada 2012, para astronom seharusnya bisa melacak itu sejak lama. Planet itu seharusnya juga bisa kita lihat sekarang dengan mata telanjang. Kenyataannya, tidak. Planet Eris memang nyata, tapi itu adalah planet kerdil, sekecil Pluto yang masih berada di luar sistem tata surya kita. Perkiraan jarak terdekat planet itu dengan bumi adalah 4 miliar mil.

Apa kata Alkitab mengenai kiamat? “Tetapi tentang hari atau saat itu tidak seorang pun yang tahu, malaikat-malaikat di sorga tidak, dan Anak pun tidak, hanya Bapa saja.” (Markus 13:32)

Itulah mengapa “secanggih” apapun ramalan mengenai apa dan bagaimana kiamat yang akan terjadi nanti, sebagai orang Kristen kita tidak boleh meyakini ramalan tersebut lantaran Alkitab dengan gamblang mengatakan bahwa hanya Allah yang mengetahui kapan peradaban manusia akan berakhir.

Entah mengapa kali ini ingin menuliskan tentang musik yang aku sukai. Banyak memang yang aku sukai, pokoknya yang enak didengar dan bisa diterima oleh telingaku, tidak fanatik kepada jenis aliran musik tertentu, tetapi seringkali yang aku sukai adalah musik-musik yang berbau rock atau metal, karena tingginya amplitudo yang membuatku lebih bersemangat dalam menjalani hari-hariku, membuat adrenalinku naik dan peredaran darahku sedikit lebih cepat sepertinya. Aku terbakar dibuatnya.

Walaupun kesannya sedikit “urakan”, tetapi yang aku sukai dari grup musik ini adalah komitmen mereka dimana mereka selalu berusaha menjaga kekompakan tim hingga detik ini. Mereka masih eksis hingga kini dan menemani hari-hariku yang seringkali bernuansa “mellow”, dan langsung merubahnya menjadi sedikit bernuansa “panas, terbakar, dan bersemangat”. Kalau dalam perjalanan jauh, di dalam bus umum, musik-musik ciptaan mereka seringkali yang membuatku merasa menjadi orang aneh, karena aku dibuatnya menjadi seorang hiperaktif dan membuat tidak nyaman orang yang duduk di sebelahku sepertinya, tetapi tak apalah, salah sendiri dia duduk di sebelahku.

Walaupun efek metal yang terpasang pada gitar dan bass, tetapi sang vokalis tetap bisa membuat suaranya terdengar dengan cukup baik dan berharmoni dengan pengiringnya yang lain, yaitu drum, gitar, dan bass. Sungguh aneh menurutku. Aku, yang terbilang pendiam tetapi bisa menyukai musik-musik seperti ini. Aku bahkan tidak dapat menjelaskan dengan pasti kenapa aku menyukainya. Saat hati berkata “suka”, ya diri ini mengikuti kata hati dan bertindak selayaknya orang yang “suka”. Entahlah, aku bingung untuk masalahku kali ini.

Baiklah, Metallica, yang merupakan salah satu grup musik kesukaanku tadi, maksudku grup musik yang membuatku lebih “hidup” dan memiliki “taste”, yang berbau “keras”, selain System Of Down, dan Avanged Sevenfold yang baru-baru ini juga ikut memenuhi listing playlist di MP3 Player dan komputerku. Karena sedikit penasaran dengan grup musik Metallica ini, pagi ini aku searching di internet tentang keeksistensian mereka. Wow, sungguh mengesankan hasilnya. Tidak salah kalau grup musik ini menjadi ICON di MTV beberapa waktu yang lalu.

Metallica didirikan pertama kali di Los Angeles – Amerika Serikat dengan nama The Young of Metal Attack. Beberapa bulan kemudian grup ini berganti nama dengan Metallica yang konon merupakan gabungan kata Metal dan Vodca. Nama Metallica sendiri sebenarnya adalah nama yang diusulkan untuk sebuah majalah musik yang dicuri oleh Lars Ulrich sebelum majalah tersebut mendapat nama tersebut. Formasi pertama Metallica adalah Lars Ulrich (drum), James Hetfield (vokal dan gitar), Lloyd Grant (gitar) dan Ron Mc Govney (bass). Formasi inilah yang kemudian melahirkan lagu pertama berjudul Hit The Light, yang kemudian masuk album kompilasi rock Metal Massacre tahun 1981.

Setelah Metal Massacre beredar, Grant dan Ron mengundurkan diri. Posisi Grant digantikan oleh Dave Mustaine dan posisi Ron digantikan Cliff Burton. Formasi ini kemudian pada Juli 1982 mengeluarkan demo-album No Life Till Leather. Demo inilah yang kemudian mengantarkan Metallica mendapatkan agen dan kemudian hijrah ke New York.

Pada 1983, Metallica berencana akan melakukan tur pendek kebeberapa kota. Sayang Hetfield dan Mustaine malah terlibat perseteruan, hingga akhirnya Mustaine keluar dan kemudian mendirikan Megadeth. Posisi Mustaine digantikan oleh Kirk Hammett , gitaris dari grup Exodus. Formasi ketiga inilah yang kemudian mengeluarkan album Kill ‘Em All pada bulan Mei 1983.

Pada tahun 1984, Metallica semakin besar dengan menerbitkan album Ride the Lightning. Album ini bertahan 50 minggu dalam Billboard Top 200. Demi memperlancar promosi mereka juga mengeluarkan mini album Jump In The Fire. September 1985, Metallica memproduksi album Master Of Puppets. Kembali Metallica masuk Billboard Top 40 selama 72 minggu. Album ini merupakan album yang meraih platinum tanpa single dan video.

Tanggal 27 September 1986, dalam perjalanan tur ke Skandinavia – bus yang mereka tumpangi mengalami kecelakaan dan Cliff Burton (bass) meninggal dunia. Peristiwa ini begitu memukul seluruh anggota band. Bahkan Dave Mustaine yang telah mendirikan Megadeth, mengenang kematian Cliff dalam lagu In My Darkest Hour (album Megadeth: So far.. So Good.. So What!). Oktober 1986, posisi Cliff Burton digantikan oleh Jason Newsted, basis dari grup Floatsam And Jetsam.

Album …And Justice For All beredar September 1988. Disinilah Metallica mulai mengeluarkan video klip. Video pertama mereka adalah untuk lagu One, video ini mencapai nomor 1 di MTV. Keberhasilan ini kemudian mendorong produksi video klip Cliff ‘Em All sebuah video kenangan untuk Cliff Burton. Akhir 1990 album Metallica direkam. Album ini membuat Metallica mencapai penjualan quadruple platinum dan menjadi album nomor satu di delapan negara Amerika dan Eropa. Serta meraih penghargaan Grammy Award, kategori Penampil Metal Terbaik dua tahun berturut-turut.

Basis jason Newsted mengundurkan diri dari band setelah bersitegang dengan James Hetfield. Perseteruan ini disebabkan Jason Newsted lebih menghabiskan waktu dengan proyek-nya sendiri. Anggota band yang lain menganggap Metallica harus diutamakan, meskipun pada saat itu Metallica sedang vakum.

Grup ini pada saat ini beranggotakan Lars Ulrich (drums), James Hetfield (vokal dan gitar), Kirk Hammett (gitar) dan Rob Trujillo (bass). Mantan anggota lainnya termasuk Ron McGovney (bass), Dave Mustaine (gitar), Cliff Burton (bass) dan Jason Newsted (bass).
